Fund's Interest Would Keep Site Operating

The founder of the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial in Angel Fire wants to raise $1.5 million in hopes of establishing a trust that would keep it permanently open.

The memorial, a father's tribute to his son killed in the Vietnam War, sees between 70,000 and 100,000 visitors a year and is the site of ceremonies on Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Built and dedicated in 1971, it has been operating on the kindness of donations from the community and visitors to the site since 1998, said Richard E. Ottis Sr., the memorial's volunteer general manager.
