Motorists Skip Narrow Big I, Limit Backups.(Metro & New Mexico)

Enough eastbound motorists avoided Interstate 40 to keep freeway backups to their normal five to 10 minutes Tuesday morning, the first day drivers faced an eastbound I-40 narrowed to one lane through the Big I.

"Things went surprisingly well," said Steve Harris, Albuquerque-area district engineer for the state. "It's pretty obvious that people got the message, and basically they took the effort to find different and alternative routes to work."

Evening rush hour also saw delays, Harris said, with cars backing up from the Big I to Sixth Street.

Eastbound I-40 is expected to remain narrowed to one lane through Sunday. …
