State Regulators OK Deming Power Plant.

State regulators on Tuesday issued the green light to build a 600-megawatt, natural gas-fired power plant in Deming that would beef up electric supplies for power-hungry Western states.

The $250 million plant, to be built by Duke Energy North America, could be operational sometime next year if the rest of the permitting process goes smoothly, said Duke spokesman Richard Fernandez.

The plant would be capable of producing more than one-third the power that Public Service Company of New Mexico generates on days when demand is heavy.
