DWI Figures Are Misleading.(Opinion)

It's not often that top public officials say one thing one week and another the next. That's what Santa Fe's top police brass have just done on the topic of DWI enforcement.

First, they attributed Santa Fe's fast-dropping DWI arrest rate to changing social values and higher penalties.

But last week, deputy chief Beverly Lennen conceded that while DWI arrests are down by nearly 45 percent over a five-year period the number of alcohol-related crashes in Santa Fe hasn't dipped. The last eight major traffic accidents in the city including two fatal crashes involved drunken drivers.

The Santa Fe sheriff's department also has reported a drop in the number of DWI arrests, but a smaller one about 29 percent. …
