Fiscal Diet Trims Budget.(Opinion)

The administration of Albuquerque Mayor Jim Baca, faced with projected budget shortfalls, is doing what it has to do: looking around for ways to trim spending. Accordingly, the department head in charge of the city's 22 community centers ordered the center supervisors to find ways to trim the budget for part-time workers by a third.

The response at the West Mesa Community Center was to post a notice last Thursday for parents of children in a child-care program. In effect, it warned parents they'd better have other arrangements by Monday, because the program was shutting down.

One weekday to line up safe child-care it's the kind of news that can give a double-worker household a case of double ulcers. …
