Council Seeks Balanced Group

The Village Council voted unanimously Tuesday to establish a "coyote committee" to recommend a policy on managing the community's coyote population.

Mayor Gary Kanin said during Tuesday's meeting that he hopes the committee will be able to reach consensus over how to handle the village's burgeoning coyote problem.

After 18 complaints in December from residents who said their pets and livestock were being killed by coyotes, Corrales Animal Control and Department of Agriculture officials started trapping and euthanizing coyotes.

The decision to kill coyotes angered some residents, including Susan Weiss, who recently submitted a petition with more than 200 signatures asking the village to stop the trapping and killing. …
