Panel Chairman Demands Records

Calling the contract to manage the nation's two nuclear weapons labs suspicious, if not illegal, a congressional leader has demanded all records behind the deal that last week renewed the University of California's control over the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

"Secretary (of Energy Bill) Richardson was put on notice," Billy Tauzin, R-La., and the new chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said in a statement Tuesday. "In effect, he thumbed his nose at Congress and the new administration. We have no choice but to pursue this matter vigorously."

Richardson left the post with the rest of President Clinton's administration last weekend. …
