School Board Candidates Debate

Martin Lujan, who lost by a narrow margin to Carla Lopez four years ago, is back on the campaign trail against the now six-year Santa Fe school board veteran.

The two candidates for the District 3 school board seat fielded 23 written questions from the public Monday at a forum moderated by the League of Women Voters of Santa Fe County at Gonzales Elementary School.

The school board election is Feb. 6.

Lopez said she entered the school board angry that the schools were not working and viewing district workers as "the scourge of the Earth."

"I have a greater understanding of why the challenges of public education are so huge," she said. "They do the job with inadequate funding from the top to the bottom. …
