Project Needed To Cut Use of Aquifer

John Stomp wants residents to talk about inflatable dams, diversion channels and a $150 million plan to start withdrawing water from the Rio Grande.

Public meetings on the city's San Juan-Chama Project will be aimed at doing just that, said Stomp, Albuquerque's water-resources manager. The meetings start Wednesday.

"I'm really interested in what the (water) rate-paying public thinks about the project," Stomp said Monday. "This is a very exciting time."

The city has rights to 48,200 acre-feet of water a year from the San Juan-Chama Project, which diverts water from the Colorado River basin into New Mexico. …
