Tax Improves Shape Of City's Roadways.(Metropolitan)

17% of Streets In Excellent Condition

One year after a new quarter-cent tax began funding street repairs and upgrades, the Albuquerque Public Works Department says far more streets are in excellent condition: 17 percent, compared to 9 percent last year.

The department has decreased the percentage of roads it rates as poor or very poor, from 34 percent last year to 26 percent this year.

"I just drove by my old house," said Mayor Jim Baca, "and they're resurfacing the street. I don't think that's been done for 53 years. The area was built in the late '40s, and I don't think anything has been done, and that's what this money is for: to invest in the old infrastructure. …
