Stolen Painting Found in Ohio.(Metro & New Mexico)

Piece Was Taken From Albuquerque Museum

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Cleveland, Ohio, reported Monday that the FBI in that city has recovered a famous painting stolen from the Albuquerque Museum in 1989.

The painting is Oscar Berninghaus' "Pueblo Indian Woman of Taos," an oil on canvas probably painted in the mid- to late-1920s.

"Berninghaus is one of the most important members of the Taos Society of Artists and this painting is one of the most important paintings in our collection," said museum director James Moore.

William J. Edwards, first assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, said the investigation is continuing into the 11 1/2-year trail of how the painting got from Albuquerque to Cleveland. …
