Oxygen Firm Accused Of Bilking Medicaid

SANTA FE There is no doubt that Shirley A. Jones' business billed the government for providing oxygen to patients who never got it, said her lawyer, Marc H. Robert.

But she didn't know the oxygen wasn't being delivered, he contended in opening arguments Monday before U.S. District Judge Martha Vazquez.

Jones and her husband, Steven L. Jones, are accused of committing millions of dollars in health-care fraud through their now-defunct company, Mega/Universal Oxygen and Home Care Services.

Resolution of the criminal case lies in whether jurors believe the couple intended to defraud the government, commit tax fraud and racketeering and obstruct justice, Robert said of the 244 charges against them. …
