Aragon Challenge Awaits Lopez Return

SANTA FE The New Mexico Senate started to get down to business Monday with newly elected Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero at the helm and Sen. Manny Aragon still out of power.

Aragon's promised challenge to last week's coup, which removed him as the chamber's longtime president pro tem, did not happen as a possible key vote was missing again.

"We're moving to do the business of the state," Romero, an Albuquerque Democrat, told reporters after announcing new Senate committees and chairmen. "I was sworn in as pro tem, and I'm moving forward."

Aragon, also an Albuquerque Democrat, continued to argue Monday that the Senate was not "duly constituted" when he was replaced by Romero in the chamber's top leadership position on a 21-20 vote, with Sen. …
