Telecom Upgrades Needed.

* Fiber-optic cable will be necessary to put northern N.M. on the cutting edge of the Web-based economy

Fiber-optic cable is the key to the telecommunications infrastructure needed for Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Taos counties to become a cybermesa for Internet-based businesses.

That is the conclusion of several people inside and outside a network of telecommunication advocacy groups. Some look for money; some lobby with various government bodies and some work directly with small businesses that are looking for more speed to transmit data over the Internet.

At the top of the network's structure is Connect NM, a statewide group with origins in the office of Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. NM TAG, a telecommunications advocacy group for northern New Mexico and Connect-Taos are regional breakouts of Connect NM.

"Businesses will not come, or will leave New Mexico because they can't (survive) without broadband," said Christina McCandless of the Santa Fe-based Regional Development Corporation, which plays a key role in NM TAG. …
