Small-business group wants tax cuts.

A group representing many of New Mexico's small-business owners is focused on two things this year tax cuts and the cost of health care.

Both are at the top of its wish list during this legislative session, according to the National Federation of Independent Business, a nonprofit small-business advocacy group.

Lowering the state's personal income tax rate is a main goal for small businesses, said Garth Simms, director of NFIB/New Mexico. "Neighboring states have much lower rates than we do," he said.

"The higher rate discourages businesses from locating or expanding in New Mexico. It makes the state less attractive to entrepreneurs who might consider locating here. …
