Baca Proposal Would Ban Protests Within 100 Feet

Mayor Jim Baca is again pushing for a city law that would restrict protests near medical clinics.

The new proposal, called the Safe Passage and Privacy Ordinance, would prohibit demonstrations within 100 feet of a medical office. Baca plans to introduce the bill at an upcoming City Council meeting.

A council committee crippled a similar proposal aimed at anti-abortion demonstrations last month.

Brian Morris, a spokesman for the mayor, said the old proposal was mired in controversy over abortion. He said Baca agreed to revive the issue after meeting with Planned Parenthood staff and doctors. …
