Programs Credited For Population Cuts

Bernalillo County's juvenile jail has cut its inmate population by more than 40 percent in the past year.

And, for the first time in years, the number of youths detained at the juvenile jail has been under 100 for nearly four months straight.

On Friday, 63 youths were being held in the 80-bed jail.

A year ago, the jail's average daily population was 106. Often during the 1990s, the teen population peaked at more than 130.

"Since I've been here, I've never seen the counts this consistently maintained," said Tom Swisstack, detention center director. …
