Stonebrooke Estates adds space without compromising views

Randall Schmille came up with an unusual way to create a two-story house without impacting the views and privacy of the rest of his neighborhood.

The homes along the western edge of Randall Homes' Stonebrooke Estates in North Albuquerque Acres are built on a slope, with finished basements that face west and open onto the back yard.

The main living floor, which faces the street and looks east, is at ground level with the remainder of the houses in the 45-lot subdivision of upscale homes.

"I wanted to have some two-story homes," Schmille said. "But I didn't want the second-story to be looking down into the house and yard of the neighbors. …
