Imagine this: You're in a Mexican jungle, minding your own business, when a scary-looking bandito says he needs your blue eyes to make a bouquet for the woman he loves.

And your eyes aren't even blue.

That's just one of the alarming moments in "Eyes for Consuela," a surreal 1998 play by Sam Shepard based on the Octavio Paz short story "The Blue Bouquet."

The play will open Thursday at the Santa Fe Playhouse and run through Feb. 11.

Paz's story briefly tells of a dissolute American who, while having drinks at a Mexican bar, is confronted by a bandit who wants his blue eyes for a bouquet. …
