Unabashedly indulging in sentiment, conductor Karen Deal made her bid for the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra's baton Friday night in Popejoy Hall. Wearing her heart on her sleeve, she led a program that put melody and feeling in the forefront.

And just in case we in the audience did not get it from the music, she told us verbally about her emotional state. How much she wanted the job, how much she missed her friends and the orchestra in Nashville, which she is nonetheless leaving.

Deal is clearly a musician of solid talent and training. If only she could have relaxed the calculated touchy-feely approach she offered for the evening. …
