* American Lung Association program gives people who want to quit an advantage

Linda is scared of what may or may not be in her future. "My daughter has just gotten married and promised me grandchildren," she said. "I'm afraid I won't be around to see them grow up."

As a smoker for 30 years, Linda has reason to fear. She could join the approximately 1,800 New Mexicans who, according to the American Lung Association, die each year from smoking.

In New Mexico, smoking kills more people than alcohol, HIV, illegal drugs and homicides combined, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

That is why Linda is trying to do something to help herself.

Linda and six others are attending Freedom from Smoking, a class sponsored by the American Lung Association that helps people quit smoking. …
