Court Decision Prompts Review

The state is considering revising its tax regulations so property record cards are more clearly defined as confidential records under state law, an official at the state Department of Taxation and Revenue said.

The department's consideration of changing its regulations follows a recent court decision ordering Sandoval County to release property record cards to a Placitas man.

Tom Garcia, director of the Property Tax Division at the state Department of Taxation and Revenue, said Thursday the department is headed toward revising its regulations so "valuation records" do not include property record cards.

A state property tax law says "valuation records are public records."

Robert Gordon of Placitas early last year sued the county after the Assessor's Office refused to release property record cards he had requested to determine if his property was assessed fairly. He has said he wants to review the property records of other county residents to compare them to his own and to ensure that properties are being assessed fairly. …
