Bears Rise Early, Keep Hive Down.(Sports)

An 18-4 run early in the game set the tone Friday night for host La Cueva, which staved off Highland the rest of the way in a 63-50 victory in boys District 2-5A basketball.

Josh Leon led the Bears (10-4, 1-1) with 16 points, followed by Mike Mendoza with 13. The Hornets' Mark Walters led all scorers with 21 points. Tyrone Bullocks added 15 for HHS.

The Hive (8-6, 0-2) scored the opening basket of the game a layup by Walters but quickly fell behind as La Cueva rattled off 18 of the next 22 points.

"I don't think we matched (La Cueva's) intensity early, and that cost us the game," said Hornets coach Rafe Martinez. "We came out flat-footed and just watched as they earned a 12-point lead.

"We played them even from that point on. But we've got to avoid those kind of lapses and learn how to finish games."

Highland managed to cut the deficit to five points at the ouset of the fourth quarter. But the Bears were able to convert seemingly on each offensive possession from that point, either getting to the free-throw line or hitting tough jumpers. …
