Man Says Business Kept Staff From Prostitution

Snowy-haired Owyhee "Red" Allen testified Thursday that he hired women to staff his three North Valley lotion parlors to keep them from being prostitutes not, as he has been charged, to promote prostitution.

Allen, on trial this week before state District Judge Pro Tem Rebecca Sitterly, denied under oath each of the 12 counts he is facing, including racketeering, extortion and bribery of a witness.

When Allen's attorney, Fred Mowrer, enumerated each count and asked Allen if he were guilty, the 76-year-old grandfatherly looking defendant said in a low, firm voice, "No, sir. …
