The Senate, like the New Mexico House, fires up politics and dishes out legislation. Unlike the House, it often goes beyond such prosaic work to create theater.

This year's Act I: The overthrow of one of the Roundhouse stage's most powerful, long-running and accomplished actors. Republicans and three Democrats voted to dethrone Senate President Manny Aragon, D-Albuquerque. The 21-20 vote elected Sen. Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, to the position Aragon had held since 1988 and which he had transformed from a largely ceremonial function to a nexus of power.

It's a tough act to follow, but Act II may rise to the challenge, as Aragon plots procedural strategy to try next week to reclaim his lost power. …
