Q. I've heard you recommend spraying trees and shrubs with Dormant Oil. What is it and why do you think it's important to use?

A. Dormant oils have been around for a very long time. Before the 1970s, oil sprays were used mainly by orchard tenders. The growers recognized the value of killing a whole host of bugs before the growing season. The spray was a heavy petroleum product that needed to be applied well before the plants leafed out. Being so heavy, the spray had the ability to scorch or burn the leaves. Through time and experimentation the old-fashioned heavy-grade petroleum based oils have been refined to a more plant-friendly pesticides. …
