University OKs Labs Contract.

The long, sometimes rocky, and recently criticized marriage between the University of California and the nation's nuclear weapons labs will persevere for another five years.

The university's Board of Regents voted Thursday to accept a renegotiated and extended contract with the Department of Energy to manage the weapons labs at Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore in California through September 2005.

Preliminary information about the contract doesn't say how much the university will be paid, but the last contract, signed three years ago, gave the institution $29.5 million a year to manage the labs.

"The new contract will provide a level of stability that the men and women of the defense labs need so they can continue to carry out their national security responsibilities," Energy Secretary Bill Richardson said in a written statement Thursday. …
