* Councilors warned of possible need for rate increase

Proposed layoffs in Santa Fe's garbage utility found little support Thursday among members of the city Public Utilities Committee.

The idea, suggested as a means to save about $225,000 annually in the financially troubled Solid Waste Division, is being introduced as a way to postpone a rate increase. Several waste workers and labor leaders attended Thursday's meeting to show their opposition.

At the same time, a possible 30 percent water-rate increase for local businesses received some support, although most committee members said they first want the utility's books straightened out. …
