Senator Urges Delay In New Mexico's Power Deregulation.

The key state senator who crafted, pushed and helped pass legislation to open New Mexico's electric industry to competition is now calling for a delay of five years.

"Deregulation and a competitive marketplace may have a role in the future of the electric utility industry," said state Sen. Michael Sanchez, D-Belen. "But for now, the timing is wrong."

The 1999 Legislature approved opening the industry to competition, which is scheduled to occur in January 2002.

But many local officials began rethinking that position after California, which already deregulated the electric industry, was hit with skyrocketing bills and rolling blackouts. …
