Maybe Sandia was looking ahead a little to Rio Grande. Or maybe it was Del Norte, which had won only one game this season, playing up to the level of its competition Tuesday night in the District 2-5A boys prep basketball opener for both teams.

Whatever the reason, it took the second-ranked Matadors (11-2, 1-0) until late in the third quarter before finally putting away the visiting Knights (1-12, 0-1) 76-50. SHS used a 15-2 run that closed out the period to take control.
