Literacy Tutoring Gets Jump Start.

Twenty percent of adults in Torrance County can read only at a first-grade level.

An adult literacy program being revived in the county aims to change those numbers. Organizers of the group are looking for area residents willing to tutor adults who need help improving their reading skills.

"Imagine what it would be like if you were barely able to read the directions on a can of soup or a bottle of prescription medicine," said Valeri McElligott, head librarian of the Moriarty Community Library and president of the board of the Read "Write" program.
