* East Mountain High's staff is working to teach students to relate learning to real life

Students in Bradd Schulke's science class at East Mountain High School are never instructed to open their textbooks during class.

Raising their hands to speak is not a rule.

And Schulke rarely stands at the front of the class and lectures.

On a typical day in Schulke's environmental science class at the charter school in Sandia Park, students are instructed to hook up their laptop computers and boot up Encarta software.

The 16 ninth-graders are allowed to converse freely about the science topic as long as they respect others when they speak. …
