* Construction is set to begin within 60 days, and the facility should open for the 2002-2003 year

Zia Pueblo's Day School has received more than $7.6 million from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to build a new school on the East Hill near the main village.

The new 44,425-square-foot school will serve an estimated 157 students more than twice the current enrollment and expand from kindergarten through sixth grade to add seventh and eighth grades.

It will replace the current two-room adobe building and three portable classrooms now used in the village.

"The tribe is sending their students to other schools because of the poor conditions of their existing schools," said Norman Suazo, chief of the planning design and construction division for the Bureau of Indian Affairs National Construction Program in Albuquerque. …
