Business Water Rate Increase Eyed.

A proposed commercial-rate increase designed to help Santa Fe's beleaguered water utility has local businessman Joe Sena wondering how long he'll keep his laundromat open.

"The way things are now, I would probably pull the plug," Sena, owner of Dirty Joe's Laundry, said of the 30 percent jump in commercial water rates proposed by city administration. "We would be working for someone else."

Members of the city Public Utilities Committee tonight expect to hear the proposal to charge businesses the same rate for water as residents are billed. The plan, one of a dozen solutions administration officials expect to present, would mean an 83-cent increase per 1,000 gallons used by businesses. …
