Community College Picks Action-Oriented President.

Anthropologist Frank Robert Vivelo, a Russian-language specialist for the Air Force in the 1960s and the author of six books, received a unanimous vote Wednesday to become the next Santa Fe Community College president.

Starting Feb. 19, he will be the college's fourth leader, succeeding John M. Pacheco.

His 1970s research on the social organization of the Bantu-speaking Herero cattle herders of Botswana in southern Africa is not what set him above other well-qualified finalists.

But his ideas on how to organize the community college did.

Vivelo also was the faculty senate's top pick. The 3 1/2-year-old group is trying to find its voice in college affairs.

On Wednesday, Vivelo affirmed he is a strong supporter of shared governance, something that impressed the faculty senate. …
