Tent Rocks Announcement Expected.

Monument Status May Come Today

President Clinton today is expected to designate the Tent Rocks near Cochiti Pueblo a national monument, Sen. Jeff Bingaman's office and the Sierra Club confirmed Tuesday.

Clinton will make the designation at a White House ceremony at 9 a.m. EST, Bingaman spokeswoman Jude McCartin said.

"Our state is home to some of the most beautiful landscape in the country even the world. Tent Rocks stands out among those many beautiful places," Bingaman, D-N.M., said in a release. "By naming Tent Rocks a national monument, we're recognizing the beauty of this unique place while ensuring the site will be protected for generations."

A Sierra Club news release also said Clinton's announcement of permanent protection from commercial exploitation for the Tent Rocks and four other wild areas in Arizona, California and Montana would come today. …
