Murder Prosecution Witness Is Missing

Joe Everisto Gurule rinsed blood off his folding knife at his kitchen sink after a man was fatally stabbed outside his trailer in Espanola, according to a videotaped statement of his ex-girlfriend.

But that ex-girlfriend, Diana Martinez of Chimayo, cannot be located to testify at Gurule's murder trial, which began Tuesday in Santa Fe. Gurule is charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the stabbing death of 39-year-old Jerry T. Ortiz of Espanola on May 24, 2000.

Defense attorneys countered that another man already has confessed to killing Ortiz and is responsible for the homicide. …
