DWI Case Doubts Need Attention.(Opinion)


Belatedly, Espanola police have charged school board member Elias Coriz with drunken driving. The question now is, will police address the bigger issue in the case an apparent cover-up initiated by one of their own officers?

According to the police, two patrolmen stopped Coriz in downtown Espanola about 2 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. Coriz failed a field sobriety test. Riding with him was the city's municipal judge Charles Maestas. According to police documents, Maestas told the officers asked for "a break."

Enter police supervisor Cpl. Anabelle Gasca. She told the patrolmen that Coriz and Maestas were friends of hers and suggested the two should get "help. …
