Schools' Finances Get Good Report.

By the end of the week, Santa Fe Public Schools could regain some or all of its fiscal authority and perhaps get a favorable accreditation rating from the state.

"We believe that the district has certainly turned the corner in financial matters," Larry Mirabal, director of the state Department of Education's school budget and finance analysis unit, said before a rejoicing crowd at Tuesday's district board meeting.

The district's 1999-2000 audit, released at the meeting, detailed how the district has bolstered its financial controls and accountability.

As Bob Bradbury, chairman of the district's audit committee, put it, Santa Fe Public Schools has gone from managing its money on little more than scraps of paper stuffed in drawers to now having a full set of financial records and controls. …
