City Eyes Garbage Job Cuts.

* Solid Waste Division also wants to end free bag program

In the most far-reaching proposal offered so far to fix one of Santa Fe's ailing enterprise funds, the city administration will soon ask lawmakers to do away with 15 solid-waste jobs by July and consider cutting another 11 the following year.

The director of the city Solid Waste Division, Bruce Jones, also is recommending the City Council junk the long-running free garbage bag program. The program, in existence since the mid-1970s, gives 104 garbage bags to every residential property owner a year at an annual cost of $115,000.

"I'm not sure the citizens are aware we're looking at elimination of this program," Jones said of the bags. …
