AG Would Be An Appointee

SANTA FE Gov. Gary Johnson on Tuesday used his annual State of the State address to propose making the attorney general and secretary of state appointed rather than elected positions.

Johnson also said he wants to abolish the positions of state treasurer and auditor and assign their work to the Department of Finance and Administration. And he called for consolidating 11 government entities responsible for managing water resources.

The governor said such measures would streamline government and save money.

The Republican governor made his proposals in a nearly 30-minute speech before a joint session of the House and Senate as legislators convened their 60-day session. …
