An Albuquerque city councilor wants the city to retain control of the jail, and he plans to introduce a bill today that would scrap an agreement transferring authority to Bernalillo County on July 1.

Councilor Mike McEntee said his measure would halt the county's plan to operate a single book-in center at the new West Side jail, 16 miles west of Downtown.

McEntee and others contend the new jail's location on the West Mesa would require officers to spend hours shuttling criminal suspects to the book-in center, where arrests are processed.

A Downtown book-in facility would reduce the amount of time officers remain off their patrols, McEntee and others say. …
