Senate GOP, Democrats Nominate Others for Post

SANTA FE Longtime Senate President Pro Tem Manny Aragon faced challenges to his controversial leadership Tuesday and resolution of the uprising was held over until today as smoldering internal politics rocked the Legislature's opening day.

Aragon, a liberal Albuquerque Democrat seen by some as too domineering, was confronted by nominations of another Democrat and a Republican for the Senate's top leadership post.

An apparently small faction of Democrats in the 42-member Senate nominated Sen. Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, while Republican Sen. Joseph Carraro of Albuquerque was nominated from the minority side of the aisle.

It was unclear whether any Democrats opposed to Aragon might join with the Senate's minority Republicans in order to elect someone other than Aragon as president pro tem. …
