PNM Gas Bills Stun Customers.

* Costs triple and may go higher as the number of complaints rises

Many of PNM's 390,000 natural gas customers expected high bills this month but not this high.

The 66-cent cost per therm is triple what it was last January, surprising even PNM officials who had warned customers to be prepared for hefty heating bills this winter.

"I think this has caught everyone off guard," said Public Service Company of New Mexico spokeswoman Julie McCabe.

And PNM is predicting the cost will rise to 73 cents per therm in February.

"It's (the price rise) probably only just starting," Albuquerque resident Michael Spottiswoode said Tuesday, standing in line to pay his PNM bill at Smith's supermarket on Fourth NW. …
