Water Top Priority For Legislative Cash

As the 45th New Mexico Legislature convenes today, officials in Santa Fe are hoping the capital receives more than the scanty appropriations from last year's Legislature.

Less than a tenth materialized in 1999 of the $3.7 million Santa Fe requested for four projects, including a south-side library and sewer installation for Maes Road. Granted, lawmakers gave $1 million for other projects in the capital city, including just $325,000 for the City Hall wish list.

"We're competing with whoever else is asking for their projects to be funded," said Juan Rios, the former Santa Fe spokesman who in September became a lobbying coordinator for the local city and county governments. …
