Coach Sanchez Still a Force.(Sports)

As a kid, Terry Darnell used to mark time on many a winter night by filing into Bernalillo High School's Spartan Alley like hundreds of other fans to watch the spectacle of Spartan boys basketball.

That's really what it was during the heyday of coach Henry Sanchez, who was Bernalillo High's head coach from 1965-83. Under Sanchez, Bernalillo was always one of the most feared and respected teams in New Mexico, and when Spartan Alley was cranked up with noise it made for an almost unmatched home-court advantage.

And the gentlemanly Sanchez certainly had a way about him; his team could spank you by 30, and often they did, but Sanchez was never held in anything but the highest esteem by his peers and by fans and players. He remains one of New Mexico's true sporting giants. …
