Elk at Bandelier Migrate Across Hunting Grounds.

This much land managers at Bandelier National Monument do know: Elk wintering there are not sitting as pretty as assumed.

Used to be, said Stephen Fettig, a wildlife biologist at the monument, most people figured the elk that winter in Bandelier left protected lands and consequently were off limits to legal hunters.

Hunting was allowed on the once-private Baca Ranch in the Valles Caldera, but it was not open to the general public. Hunting privileges on the Baca Ranch sold for $10,000 for a trophy bull elk and $600 for a cow.

The elk summer in the adjacent Valles Caldera National Preserve, which the federal government acquired last year. …
