Unit Head Pins Blame on Staffing

Arrests for drunken driving in Santa Fe have declined by about a third over the past five years, but a police officer in DWI enforcement claims the decline is due to fewer officers, not a better-behaved public.

Each year since 1997, the Santa Fe Police Department has arrested fewer drunken drivers than it did the previous year.

Over a five-year period, 1996-2000, the number of drunken drivers the police department put behind bars declined 38 percent.
