Could La Nina have driven the Anasazi from the Four Corners region 700 years ago?

Archaeologists have long suspected a prolonged drought might have played a role in the decline and departure of the once-dominant native culture.

But could summer rains have increased to the southeast when the drought hit, offering new water supplies and a lowland refuge drawing the Anasazi away from their Colorado Plateau homes?

That was the provocative hypothesis offered by climate researcher Henry Diaz on Monday during a meeting of the American Meteorological Society in Albuquerque.

Diaz is one of about 2,000 weather and climate scientists and forecasters in Albuquerque for the organization's weeklong annual meeting. …
