Ranching Industry Loses Worthy Advocate.(Editorial Page)

Ranchers lost a worthy and passionate advocate for their industry in the passing Thursday of Roswell sheep and cattle rancher H.W. "Bud" Eppers.

A lifelong rancher, Eppers first did battle with the federal government in the mid-1970s when ordered to cut fences in an antelope migration program; he argued that the fences were a rancher's first line of defense against predators and wound up with a settlement that made the program voluntary.

In subsequent years, he was ever vigilant in making sure the Legislature, federal agencies and universities knew how ranchers stood when it came to public lands policy, how they would be affected by the latest wildlife study, hunting bag limit or land use plan. …
